Happy Sounding Songs About Unhappy Things.
What exactly is the purpose of trying to convey a dark message through some upbeat melodies? To lessen the blow, as a metaphor for our complacency, just to creep us out? Regardless there’s some seriously disturbed themes being hidden in the catchiest tunes i’ve ever heard.
  • Keep Awake - 100 monkeys
I think this one is pretty self explanatory, i mean the first thing you hear is “I will kill you in your sleep.” But its just so catchy, the acoustic major chords just don’t match and the vocals fit perfectly, somehow.
  • Semi- Charmed Life- Third Eye Blind
The funny thing is that its kinda hard to make out the lyrics of alot of these songs, so you really don’t catch whats creepy until later. Like this:
“The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal meth, will lift you up until you break”
  • Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
By far my favorite song in this list, the chorus can and will get stuck in your head forever. But its about school shootings. And its not even disguised. Unlike some other songs you can easily make out “better run faster than my bullet.”
  • Misery - Maroon 5
Imagine my suprise when i walked into my little sister’s room just to hear “Sometimes these cuts are so much deeper than they seem/ You'd rather cover up/ I'd rather let them bleed”
  • Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
Now im not a big fan of Springsteen, but this song gets on for the irony. An anti war song about vietnam that so many people take as a patriotic anthem, too funny.
