Using the Incredibles to try to make sense of the world Hye Jee Kim

This prompt scares me. But I'll try.

Absolutely good people and absolutely evil people don't exist. Nobody is evil all of the time. And even the worst people were good sometimes, and vice versa.

Sticking to using fictional characters as examples, take a look at one of the best movies of all time: THE INCREDIBLES. At first glance the protagonists of this movie are perfect. You've got the super strong father, the equally strong mother, the smart sister, and the fun brother. Together the kick butt and save the world together. But when you've watched that movie as many times as I have, you realize that they're all flawed. As a whole, they're a dysfunctional family that lies, doubts, fights, ignores, and makes mistakes. Unless you have a strange definition of good, these characteristics aren't all that desirable. So clearly this superhuman family isn't just a big happy bundle of good qualities.

The same goes for the villain, SYNDROOOMMMEEE (not actually how it's spelled, just how I pronounce it in my head). Don't get me wrong, he's a pretty evil guy. I mean, he killed a bunch of superheroes to test his robot weapon, which he was only creating so that he could destroy it and become a superhero in the eyes of the public (spoilers, by the way). He's not 100% evil, though. He once was dedicated, enthusiastic, and eager to help.

So since there's no pure good and pure evil in this world, I guess that evil can't wipe out good and good can't wipe out evil. I mean, for that to happen, they would have to vanquish parts of themselves. And I don't think that's quite possible. No matter what, people will mess up and do not-so-good things.

And that's okay.

Just because people aren't 100% good all of the time, that doesn't mean that good people don't exist. Just because Mr. Incredible knocks down a burning building (which was, in his defense, coming down anyway) doesn't change that fact that he saved people. If we said that the requirements for being good were to NEVER give in to the dark side, no one would ever be good. Same goes for evil people. They might not be evil all of the time, but they are still bad. SYNDROOOMMMEEE may have tried to help Mr. Incredible stop a robbery, but he destroyed a city.

Ultimately, evil and good aren't things that people can be all the time. They are subjective and really all about how people act in a moment. If SYNDROOOMMMEEE came back to life, knocked on Mr. Incredible's door, and genuinely apologized, it doesn't necessarily make up for what he did, but it does make him not so evil. And if Das grew up to be a reverse Robin Hood and steal from the poor to give to the rich, well he wouldn't be as good.

Good and evil will aways exist. Good people will do bad things, and bad people will do good things.

Well, I tried. Sorry.
