Assignment #2: Liz Graves

In this day and age it is very easy to look at technology as the enemy of socialization. At some point, all of us have seen the depressing image of a group of people sitting around a table eating a meal, and they’re all on their phones--not talking. I will be one of the first to say, seeing things like that make me somewhat nostalgic for the pre-social media and texting days, but I will be one of the last to say technology has ruined our society.

Because of technology, people now have an incredible amount of access to information. This allows people to more informed, more educated, more active in their communities. People are less inclined to make a political decision or form an opinion based purely on the word of their parents or peers, and more inclined to cite facts to support their position. Without technology and the inherent wealth of information that comes with that, people would be much more biased. In that sense, I think technology has been an incredibly positive thing in my life. I feel confident that I can have an intelligent conversation about the things I believe in, because there is readily available information to support them.
