Assignment 7- Claire jicha

On September 14, 1812, the city of Moscow burned. Napoleons troops marched into Moscow after the battle of Borodino and more fighting ensued and many Russian citizens were forced to flee from their homes and the city. This, obviously, constitutes a negative event but as a result of this Tchaikovsky wrote one of the most important pieces of Russian music, the 1812 Overture.
This man was a brilliant musician and composer, and as a musician I really admire and appreciate all his work, especially the 1812 Overture. I mean cannons, he put 16 cannon shots into the piece. Four of which, at 12:11, represent the above skirmish and battle. Who looks at a piece of music and goes, you know this could use some cannon fired here. Probably the same kind of person who puts more cowbell into a piece.
Our wind ensemble band recently played Marche Slave, which is a piece preluding 1812 overture which shares some musical themes, so I’ve been on a Tchaikovsky kick. So i apologize for not using not only this blog post but the event as well to justify my ranting.
