I, personally, really watch TV. I really can't stand having 1/3 of the time I am watching TV being advertisements, when I could use services like Netflix or YouTube to get more immediate entertainment. I think that TV is a bit dated at this point as well. More and more streaming services are created where you can get endless entertainment on demand, with no ads, and for less money each month. I think that TV is eventually going to become obsolete in favor of these services.
In that respect, I do think that TV is a waste of time, but I don't think that the core of it is. I still watch TV shows from time to time, even if they are not directly on TV. I think that TV is a great source of entertainment, and it shows with advertisers still pumping out ads for it. I also think it is understandable how the Nobel Prize get less attention in the media than something like the Emmys. For the average person, the Nobel Prizes are not very accessible. Not many people know enough about current issues or science or literature to really care about them, let alone understand what the person who wins actually did. It is much easier to keep up with the Kardashians than to follow the nominees for the Nobel Prize.
